Acne - Definition
Acne is a disruption in the skin caused by different factors, including bacteria, hormones and genetics. The pilosebaceous unit is comprised of the hair-growing follicle and the sebaceous gland which releases sebum to the skin surface through the pore. There is a normal population of bacteria called Propionibacterium Acnes (P.Acnes) in the skin, but when pores become clogged the build-up of sebum and the enhanced proliferation of P.Acnes under anaerobic conditions causes blackhead or whitehead comedones to form within the pore.
White blood cells infiltrate the area and ensuing inflammation can lead to acneiform lesions called papules, nodules or cysts. The goals of treatment for active eruptive acne are: to reduce the bacteria count of the acne-causing P.Acnes, and to control the activity of the sebaceous gland to reduce excess sebum production. The clinical improvements in the appearance of acne are evidenced by reducing the size of individual acne lesions, reducing the frequency of acne eruptions, and promoting faster healing times.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) - Hair Removal
Permanent hair reduction means that when a follicle is thermally destroyed it is not able to grow a terminal hair again. By combining both light and radio frequency current with the eStyle, two different energy sources are being used to thermally damage the follicle. Even follicles that grow poor melanin target hair, such as grey, red or blonde hair can be treated effectively. The average number of sessions for dark hair and coarse hair under normal hormonal conditions is 6 – 8. More sessions may be required for light and fine hair and for hormonally controlled areas like the chin.
One touch-up treatment session may be needed when there is sporadic new hair growth due to individual natural physiological processes. The number of required treatment sessions mostly depends on the hair growth cycle, the colour and depth. It is therefore advisable to Contact us for a personal assessment at Potchmed, Potchefstroom. Areas to be treated by eStyle : Under arms, Bikini area, Legs (Full leg or Half leg), Back, Upper Lip, Chin, Cheeks, Full face.
Hair Growth Cycles
Long-term hair removal has to affect hair in the active cycle of its growth, namely in Anagen. All long-term epilating methods target hair at this stage; and since the growth cycle differs between body areas, each body area requires re-treatment at different time intervals to achieve maximum results.
The normal hair cycle is comprised of three stages: active growth – Anagen, transition – Catagen and resting – Telogen. Hair follicles go through these cycles in a non-synchronized manner. It is important to understand the hair growth cycle in order to have realistic expectations.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) - Skin Tightening
A full treatment regimen at Potchmed consists of
- A treatment schedule - the initial number of ReFirme treatments is 3-5
- Treatment frequency - each ReFirme treatment should be scheduled 3 to 4 weeks apart
- Supporting and maintenance treatment - approximately every 6 months
At the end of the treatment regimen: Fine wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed on sagging skin and the texture of your skin becomes smoother, more luminous and toned.
Collagen and elastin depletion in the dermis results in loss of the dermal volume, presenting as lines, wrinkles, laxity and sagging in the skin.
We use the ReFirme ST procedure which stimulates long term collagen synthesis as well as the tightening of existing collagen fibers, giving an immediate firmed or tightened appearance. Fine lines and superficial wrinkles appear smoothed out and softened as a result of the tissue tightening and contraction from bulk heating. Laxity of the brow, jowls, neck and cheek areas is improved from immediate tissue contracture, and may continue to improve with the delayed collagen remodeling response.
To optimized results
The ReFirm ST Wrinkle Treatment can be performed immediately following a skin rejuvenation treatment. When the skin rejuvenation treatment involves full area coverage it is sufficient to receive the ReFirme ST Wrinkle Treatment on regional sections (for example around the eyes, mouth etc) only.
The number of ReFirme ST Wrinkle Treatments typically varies between 3-5 sessions, every 3-4 weeks. More sessions may be needed for aged skin. . It is therefore advisable to Contact us at Potchmed for a personal assessment.

Everyone knows that regular exercise and a balanced diet are two of the important ways to stay healthy, feel well and look good. However nothing can stop time passing and whether we like it or not, we all grow older and it shows in our faces.
Luckily, there are various ways we can help maintain out youthful glow. For example:
- Use sunscreen every day when going out in the sun
- Don’t smoke – it is linked to premature wrinkles
- Eat a healthy diet including fresh fruit and vegetables
- Drink plenty of water
- Apply moisturizers to help keep skin smooth and moisturized
Inevitably, wrinkles and lines from when time passes because the skin becomes less elastic and flexible. This is a normal part of the ageing process and it would be artificial to keep it at bay indefinitely. It is important to think, however, about how line and wrinkles can make you look more tired, angry or older than you really are. Major causes of being overweight:
Inherited slow metabolism
Research has proven obesity to be linked to genetic inheritance. Thus body weight can be influenced by genetic factors such as inherited slow combustion mechanism. Endocrine factors, increased deposition, etc.
Hormone sensitive metabolism
Puberty, contraceptives, pregnancy, hysterectomy, fertility treatment or hormone replacement therapy often results in weight gain or obesity.
Low Leptin Levels
Leptin is circulating protein hormone produced by fat cells. Leptin regulates food intake by binding to specific receptors in the brain and thereby regulates neuroendocrine function and energy intake and expenditure. Deficiencies of Leptin are associated with obesity. Patients with high Leptin can eat almost anything without gaining weight. Patients with low Leptin levels suffers from an increased appetite and desire for food, and everything they eat is changed into fat and stored. Causes of low Leptin levels include genetic factors, hormonal treatment, medication such as cortisone, antibiotics and antidepressants, viral infections, emotional trauma and stress, anaesthetics and compulsive eating habits.
Some people overload their metabolism so much that the body can’t burn excess food fast enough, so the food is stored as fat. When this happens regularly, the brain’s ability to differentiate between hunger and cravings becomes diminished. Eventually it become extremely difficult to resist any craving for food and this leads to a destructive cycle of obesity.
